First things first: congratulations! Somewhere between the happy tears and the flood of “Have you picked a date yet?” texts, it hits you. There’s a whole wedding to plan! If you’re feeling equal parts thrilled and a little overwhelmed, you’re in very good company. That’s exactly why we created this Maryland wedding timeline. It breaks your planning into clear phases, from booking your venue to mailing your thank-you notes. That way, you’ll always know what to focus on next (and what can happily wait).

At Moore & Co., we’ve helped couples plan weddings all across Maryland. If there’s one thing we’ve learned along the way, it’s that good pacing is what keeps an engagement fun. You don’t need to make every decision this month. You just need to make the right ones at the right time. Below is the month-by-month rhythm we recommend, plus a few tips we’ve picked up from years of planning Maryland weddings. Here’s to savoring every season of being engaged!

12+ Months Out: Lay the Foundation

This first stretch of your Maryland wedding timeline is about the big picture. It’s also when you’ll book the vendors who can only take one wedding per date. Don’t worry, it’s more fun than it sounds!

  • Celebrate first. Soak in this moment with the people you love. Call your grandparents, toast with your best friends, and let the spreadsheets wait a few weeks. (Not sure where to begin? Here are the 10 things we recommend doing first.)
  • Talk budget together. Sit down with your partner, plus any family who’s lending a hand, and have an open, honest conversation. If everyone has an opinion (they usually do, and it comes from love!), our tips on setting kind boundaries with family will help you keep things sweet.
  • Dream up your guest list. Even a rough count helps you find a venue where everyone fits comfortably.
  • Find your venue. Many Maryland venues book 12 to 18 months ahead, especially for spring and fall Saturdays.
  • Bring your planner on board. The sooner we meet, the sooner we can build a vendor team that fits your budget, your style, and your personality.
  • Book your photographer and band or DJ. The most loved ones fill up almost as quickly as venues.
  • Start dress shopping. Bring your favorite people along! Made-to-order gowns can take 8 to 10 months, with fittings after that.

Planner Tip: Maryland’s weather changes from region to region. A September evening on the Chesapeake Bay feels very different from one in Western Maryland. Once your venue and season are set, every other choice gets so much easier.

9 to 12 Months Out: Build Your Team

With your venue set, it’s time for one of our favorite topics: taking care of your guests. Think food, travel, and making everyone feel welcome.

    • Book your caterer if your venue lets you bring one in. (Yes, this means tastings are in your future!)
    • Reserve hotel blocks early. Annapolis on a Navy game weekend or St. Michaels in July can fill up fast, and you’ll want your loved ones close by.
    • Order your dress so there’s plenty of time for alterations.
    • Book your videographer. Years from now, hearing your vows and your family’s laughter again will mean the world.
    • Collect guest addresses in one spreadsheet. Future you will be so grateful.
    • Set up your wedding website so out-of-town guests can start planning their trip.

Before signing any contracts, check out our questions to ask Maryland wedding vendors. It’s the same list we use to find vendors who will care about your day as much as you do.

Planner Tip: Make a shared wedding email address. It keeps vendor emails out of your personal inbox, so date night can stay date night.

6 to 9 Months Out: Design, Rentals, and Attire

This is where your wedding really starts to feel like you (and honestly, it’s our favorite part!). Your venue and your personal style finally come together.

    • Settle on your design. We love sitting down with couples to dream up colors, table settings, and linens that tell their story.
    • Book your florist and talk through which blooms will be in season.
    • Reserve rentals like lighting, draping, cozy lounge furniture, china, and glassware.
    • Send save the dates 8 to 10 months out, or closer to a year for holiday weekends.
    • Order bridesmaid dresses with time to spare for shipping and alterations.
    • Book hair and makeup. Great artists fill their wedding season quickly.
    • Arrange transportation so your guests get to and from the party safely.

Planner Tip: If design decisions start to feel endless, take a breath. Your guests will remember how welcome they felt, not whether the place cards were ivory or alabaster.

4 to 6 Months Out: Tastings and Check-Ins

Now your ideas become real plans. Bring your appetite!

    • Check in with your planner on contracts, quotes, and the budget. We’ll make sure nothing slips through the cracks.
    • Enjoy your catering and cake tasting. Pick your service style, signature cocktails, and bar package.
    • Start on invitations so proofs can print without rush fees.
    • Order suits or tuxedos for the groom and groomsmen.
    • Schedule your hair and makeup trial once you know your neckline and veil.
    • Book your honeymoon, and make sure passports are valid six months past your trip.
    • Shop for wedding bands, leaving time for sizing or engraving.

Planner Tip: Plan one date night a month where wedding talk is off-limits. A Maryland winery or dinner in Fells Point is perfect (just leave the seating chart at home). 2 to 3 Months Out: Invitations and Paperwork

This part of your Maryland wedding timeline has the most paperwork, but don’t worry. Taken one step at a time, it’s very manageable.

      • Mail invitations 10 to 12 weeks out, with RSVPs due 4 to 5 weeks before the wedding. Our post on communicating your dress code has easy wording ideas, so your guests arrive feeling comfortable and confident.
      • Design your day-of paper goods, like the seating chart, table numbers, bar signs, and programs.
      • Finalize floor plans and vendor load-in times with your planner.
      • Get your marriage license. In Maryland, you apply with the circuit court clerk in the county where your ceremony will happen. Baltimore City has its own office. There’s a 48-hour waiting period, and the license is good for six months. We suggest applying 30 to 60 days before the wedding.
      • Start dress alterations. Most first and second fittings happen around now.
      • Finalize your ceremony with your officiant, including readings and vows.
      • Pick your key songs for the processional, recessional, first dance, and parent dances. (Grab the tissues!)

1 Month Out: Final Walkthrough and Headcounts

The finish line is in sight! This month is all about final numbers and those sweet, personal touches.

      • Do your final walkthrough with your planner, venue coordinator, and caterer.
      • Gather RSVPs and send final counts and meal choices to your caterer.
      • Adjust rental and floral counts to match.
      • Finish your seating chart and send names to your calligrapher.
      • Pick up your dress, and make sure someone knows how to bustle it.
      • Buy gifts for your wedding party, your parents, and each other. A heartfelt note goes a long way.
      • Put together welcome bags with Maryland favorites like Berger cookies and Old Bay. It’s a little taste of home for your out-of-town guests.

Planner Tip: Wear your wedding shoes around the house for 15 minutes at a time. Your feet will thank you on the dance floor.

      Wedding Week: Hand It Off

By this point in your Maryland wedding timeline, the hard work is done. This week is for soaking up time with the people who drove, flew, and cheered you on. Let your team take it from here.

      • Approve your final timeline. We’ll share it with every vendor, your wedding party, and your family.
      • Make final vendor payments.
      • Prep labeled tip envelopes for each vendor team.
      • Pack your bags: attire, rings, your marriage license, personal items, and one spare invitation suite for detail photos.
      • Enjoy your rehearsal dinner, and hug everyone who came early.
      • Rest, drink water, and mute the group chats.

      Your Wedding Day: Be Present

This is it! Here’s how to stay present for every moment.

      • Hand your phone and personal items to someone you trust.
      • Eat a real breakfast, and keep water nearby while you get ready.
      • Take 5 to 10 minutes alone together right after the ceremony.
      • Let your team handle the rest, from timing to weather to dinner service.
      • Celebrate with your favorite people!

      After the Celebration

Once the last song plays, here’s what to keep in mind.

      • Ask someone to return rentals and tuxedos the next day.
      • Send your gown to be cleaned within a few weeks.
      • Mail thank-you notes within three months.
      • Leave reviews for your vendors on Google and WeddingWire. It means so much to small businesses like ours!

Your Maryland Wedding Timeline, Made for You

Think of this Maryland wedding timeline as a helpful starting point, not a strict rulebook. Every couple’s story is different, and so is every plan. A cozy winter wedding in a Baltimore ballroom moves on a different schedule than a summer celebration under a tent by the water. Your season, your venue, your guest list, and what matters most to your family all shape the path.

And life happens in between! A vendor’s schedule shifts, a dress shipment runs late, or a family conversation takes a little longer than planned. That’s completely normal, and it’s exactly why we’re here.

At Moore & Co., we build each plan around your season, your venue, and your priorities. So if planning ever starts to feel like too much, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Whether you’d love full-service planning from day one or support in the final weeks, we’ll customize our help to fit exactly what you need.

Ready to start planning? Reach out to Moore & Co Events and tell us all about your Maryland wedding. We can’t wait to meet you!
